Movie Review: Caddyshack

The movie Caddyshack has so many intangibles to it. Many people already have an opinion on this movie and a blog truly may not be necessary. With that said, here is my review of Caddyshack.

First, let's look at the cast:
Rodney Dangerfield: Personally, in spurts he is hilarious. When I see his old stand-up, I think it's a little too much. If he were on something like Pulp Comics, I would love it. I actually liked the commercial breaks from his comedy, gave me a second to rest. In this movie, you have him blending in his comedy perfectly. And doing what he is best at, obnoxious comedy.

Chevy Chase: I find him funny when he uses his quick humor. All the falls he took on SNL weren't that funny, but his quick subtle comments are very underrated. Infact, I am glad that they only have Chevy Chase take a fall at the end of the movie when he has built up all the stress from the bet. I think that he really paved the way for the quirky people on TV that we love so much. Example, he is massaging the judge's niece and she says, "You're crazy" Chase's quick under the breath comment was, "That's what they said about Son of Sam." It takes a second to catch it, but it definitely makes me giggle.

Bill Murray: I could watch Bill Murray all day. Ghostbusters (I or II), Stripes, even Space Jam. There are a couple comedians out there that you just have to say, "Do something funny" and they can deliver for the movie while not breaking role. The comedy actors that come to mind for these kinda situations are: Robin Williams, Bill Murray, Ryan Reynolds, and Neil Flynn. Robin Williams is just funny, Ryan Reynolds has just a great delivery of whatever he says, and I dare you to watch an episode of Scrubs and find a line that Neil Flynn (the Janitor) says that was actually in the actual script. Quick sidenote(and fact), in scrubs the script will occasionally say, "Neil says something". Well, back to my point of Bill Murray, hilarious, and in this movie gives some of the best one liners ever. "Cinderella story... IT'S IN THE HOLE!"

There are other actors in the movie, but I don't know their names, just the characters, Danny, and the Judge. The Judge just is the best stereotype of a country club snob.

The overall movie, well let's face it, with how I just described the cast, the movie could have the same plot as any Rob Sneider movie, and it would still be worthy of the watching. Hell, the movie could star Paris Hilton and New York(Vh1's "reality star"), and I would still watch it.

But let's look at the main conflicts in the movie:
1) The Judge v Rodney Dangerfield: The uptight Judge hates the loud and obnoxious Rodney Dangerfield who at the end of the movie says he is only interested in Bushwood, because he wants to buy it. They first meet with Dangerfield offending him, and then he continues to do so throughout the movie, and even wrecks the Judge's brand new boat before it leaves the docks. This leads up to the end of the movie where they have the golf playoff.
2) Danny trying to go to college and get money for it. The typical plot line in almost all movies is used. Guy is liked, becomes a suck-up and his friends turn on him, and he wins them back in the end.
3) Bill Murray v the Gopher: if you don't know this then you really must see the movie.

I decided I was gonna try and shorten this up, so one last section. Famous Scenes:
The first scene worth mentioning in the movie is the famous Baby Ruth in the Pool scene. Not only is the part where everyone is freaking out about a large turd(the baby ruth bar) being in the pool, but the part after. Everyone has evacuated the pool and there are people in HAZMAT suits scrubbing the sides. Then, Bill Murray takes off his mask, picks up the baby ruth bar, sniffs it, takes a bite and says, "It's not that bad." The Judge's wife faints thinking he just ate poop, classic.
The other scene is right at the end. Bill Murray just blew up the golf course trying to kill the gopher, but the gopher emerges from the ground coughing out smoke. You then see the gopher starting to dance and you hear music in the background playing, "I'm alright...." Great ending!
